Final show of the year for us brings together the differing tuning systems of Michiko Ogawa & Lucy Railton’s FRAGMENTS OF REINCARNATION (music for shō , organ & cello) …the amplified objects, processes of sound-artist Lee Patterson & a rare solo piano performance from composer, improviser Lawrence Dunn.

FRAGMENTS OF REINCARNATION

"A 45-minute single movement piece for shō, Hammond organ and cello, exploring ways of combining the differing tuning systems inherent in the instruments."

Berlin/London based musician Lucy Railton has been an active performer, programmer and music maker since 2008, releasing albums on Modern Love, Editions Mego - GRM Portraits, PAN, ECM, SN Variations, Shelter Press and Takuroku. Having emerged from a long-term engagement with classical and contemporary music, she now makes her own work alone or in collaboration with artists and musicians from varied disciplines, including Rebecca Salvadori, Peter Zinovieff, Catherine Lamb, Khyam Allami, Kit Downes, Kali Malone and Stephen O’Malley, and in recent years has worked with Beatrice Dillon, Philippe Parreno, Rhodri Davies, Laura Grace Ford, Alex Hills, choreographers Akram Khan and Sasha Milavic Davies, Yair Elazar Glotman and the film director John Lee. As an organiser she has been involved in presentations of work by Maryanne Amacher and Henning Christiansen amongst many other productions during her time as co-director at London Contemporary Music Festival and Kammer Klang, and has performed in focus concerts lead by Pauline Oliveros, Iancu Dumitrescu, Mary Jane Leach, Cally Spooner, Matmos and many more. Lucy has performed at festivals and venues including Dark Mofo (Tasmania), Blank Forms (New York), Cafe Oto, Borealis Festival, Atonal, Koln Philharmonie, Barbican, Berlin Jazz, Donaueschingen, Sydney Opera House, Rewire, AKOUSMA (GRM), Norbergfestival, Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía and CTM.

Michiko Ogawa is performer-composer born and raised in Tokyo, Japan.\ \ She is a member of several musical groups, including Berlin's Harmonic Space Orchestra and  working with Lucy Railton, Manuel Pessoa de Lima, James Rushford, Sam Dunscombe, Ellen Arkbro, Tashi Wada and others.\ \ She was awarded Bachelor's degree (BA) from Toho-Gakuen School of Music, Master's degree(MA)for clarinet performance from the Musikhochschule Freiburg under Prof. Jörg Widmann, and  her Doctoral degree (DMA) from the University of California (San Diego) in 2019 with research on the film music of Teiji Ito, and is currently writing a biography of him.

Lee Patterson uses sound making and recording to devise performances with a selection of amplified objects, devices and processes, from rock chalk to springs, from burning nuts to vibrating metal.\ Based in Prestwich, Manchester, UK., he works internationally and has featured on UK TV, BBC Radios 3, 4 and 6, Resonance FM and on radio stations worldwide.  

Lawrence Dunn (*1991) is a composer, improviser and music writer born in Walthamstow, London.

Attending Trinity College of Music as a junior, training as a pianist and percussionist, he later studied at Cambridge and at Huddersfield with Bryn Harrison. In 2018 he was shortlisted for the Gaudeamus Award. His music has been performed by Apartment House, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Quatuor Bozzini, Plus-Minus, Slagwerk Den Haag, Ensemble Mosaik, L’Instant Donné, Philip Thomas and Juliet Fraser. Recent pieces include a new work for Explore Ensemble, premiered at Wigmore Hall in 2022, with a recording to be released soon on Huddersfield Contemporary Records.
